Great picture books by William Steig (Dr. De Soto) and Bernard Waber (Lyle, Crocodile and
Ira sleeps Over).
Funny 3 Book series: Miss Nelson is missing - about a mean substitute teacher
Roald Dahl books: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
There is a great science picture book series called "Lets Read and Find Out"
There are also Dr. Seuss non fiction series: The Dr. Seuss Learning Library
Nate the Great - a picture book detective story
Frog and Toad series
Little Bear bear series
Madeline series
Bedtime for Francess series
Curious George series

Children's librarian here 
I highly recommend all the Mo Willems books, both picture books (Knuffle Bunny, Pigeon, Edwina, etc) and beginning-reader books (Elephant and Piggie, Unlimited Squirrels, etc).
For picture books:
Jon Agee (Life on Mars, The Wall in the Middle of the Book, etc)
Jory John (seconding tigerwife's vote!) - also love Penguin Problems
Kevin Henkes (Owen, Lily, Chester, etc)
For beginning readers:
Syd Hoff - Danny and the Dinosaur, Sammy, Horse, etc.
Cynthia Rylant - Henry and Mudge, Annie and Snowball (a little more complex)
Alyssa Satin Capucilli- Biscuit series (easier)
Shannon Hale - Princess in Black (these are cute - they're easy chapter books)
For reading out loud to them/early chapter books:
A lot of kids like the Magic Tree House series.
Definitely agree with the Beverly Cleary recommendation.
I would also say Andrew Clements depending how mature they are.
Lots more...Boxcar Children...Clementine series (Sara Pennypacker)...A to Z Mysteries (Ron Roy)...

Oh I remember Cam Jansen and A-Z mysteries! I loved both but Cam Jansen was one of my favorites! And Junie B Jones!
Is that 6 year old reading level? I was going to suggest Amelia Bedelia.
I also read the Babysitters Club. I'll come back if I can think of more.

I came to suggest the mo willems books but see that someone beat me too it. My seven year old advanced reader just started on junie b jones which she is enjoying. (I’m not a big fan though as the way of writing is in a kids mind and not proper English but that’s just me)

Thank you everyone for your suggestions!
This gives me a great start what to look for a lot of what’s been mentioned we have read the entire magic treehouse series many of boxcar children cam Jansen but there’s a lot here that I can still look into
The books I was looking for our picture books that we read at night together so they don’t have to be a lower reading level I actually prefer books with higher reading level when we read to them thanks for all the suggestions

If you look at Amazon reviews you will see that junie b jones books are controversial even by
non-jews because of junie's chutzpah and bad english grammar - which is how a 2 y.o. talks,
not a 5-6 y.o.

Bobbsy Twins Series (like a junior nancy drew series)
Little Critter series by Mercer Mayer
Also books on Aesop's Fables.
Stone Soup (picture book)
Three Wishes (picture book)
Fire Cat - good beginner reader
Go, Dog, Go - good beginner reader
A Fish Out of Water
Wacky Wednesday (lot of fun!) - there is a Jewish version "Funny Friday"

I loved reading poetry to my children at that age. I have a big picture book called Poems for Children with well-known poems and beautiful illustrations, and I used to read to my girls before bedtime. Poems like "The Prettiest Doll in the World" and "where the toys go" and "the walrus and the carpenter", "the spider and the fly", etc....
My girls recently told me that they have such good memories of these.
