Another thread was posted about a 3 year old, which I think is totally age appropriate.
What about a very imaginative 8 year old who loves to play teacher, pretend she's a singer, etc. she talks to herself constantly in play mode but only at home. I'm not at all concerned about her socially otherwise, she's well-adjusted in school and thank G-d teachers report she's very happy and social. Others have kids this age or older who talk to themselves when playing school or when engaged in imaginative play? If she notices someone in the house noticing her doing it, she kind of smiles shyly and stops. But I don't like to get in the way because she seems to enjoy it and it's like her down time after school.

Doesn’t sound concerning because she is able to compartmentalize the behavior so she only does it when she’s playing by herself at home and has good social skills.

I think what OP is describing is called “playing” not “talking to oneself”
