She said restrictions are in order to protect the medical system. How did you interpret that to refer to politics?

Just to elaborate on the idea that restrictions are to protect the medical system - the restrictions are the MINIMUM standards, that are not enough to save the maximum amount of lives, they only serve to prevent the medical system from being overwhelmed.

Again, they are a MINUMUM.

If you want to be machmir on pikuach nefesh you will go further than the minimum restrictions and eliminate all non-essential gatherings. By non-essential I mean sheva brachos, weddings with more than a minyan, bar mitzvahs, sholom zachors, group shabbos meals and community shiurim for adults that could easily be streamed on the internet. I do not mean that shuls or schools should shut down.

It is very frustrating that what people want is getting conflated with what people need and fueling the insane spread of covid.

No one ever thought young people can’t get COVID. Why do we keep having threads with this title. There’s a reason why these cases make the news.

You want to save maximum lives? Don't step into a car.

We do hishtadlus. People die from all sorts of things. We wear seatlbelts and helmets and take precautions when doing adventure activities. We try not to smoke even though lots of non smokers can get lung cancer too or damage.

You’re giving examples of protecting yourself. The purpose of covid restrictions is to protect both yourself AND OTHERS.

Let's define what exactly does "protect the medical system" mean to you?! Anybody with me on this?

How would not stepping into a car save maximum lives? 38K ppl die in the US a year in car accidents. Over 350K ppl have died from covid.

Hishtadlus is following expert recommendations. Experts recommend to avoid indoor gatherings and group meals. The fact that you call a shalom zachor a "religious gathering" so that you circumvent the guidelines does not mean you are doing your hishtadlus.

No, it's not called politics.
It's called making sure that the hospitals are able to take care of those who can't survive this at home r"l.

They do very well?

15% of college athletes show signs of heart damage after covid. https://abcnews.go.com/Health/.....31050 You think that permanent heart damage is "doing very well"?

And stop with the hyperbole. No one has EVER suggested staying indoors for 9 months. Wear a mask. Develop a covid pod of people you and your family interact with, and stick to them. Don't attend huge parties. Then live your life.

The 15% represents exactly 4 athletes. The entire study was done on 26 athletes. It seems the athletes weren't experiencing any discomfort and weren't aware of the inflamation. The study was also taken shortly after the athletes had Covid. They will be re-evaluated in a few weeks and they might be all better. I don't know why you're referring to this as permanent.

You can do a Shalom zachor outdoors with minimal people and have a stand up affair.

Covid also killed a lot of people because no one is taking it seriously. Look at the death rate outside of the US.

There's other studies on the general population. It's likely higher than that.

The time for outside simchas was in August when Covid was was between 5 and 10 times less prevalent (depending on were you live). Unfortunately, that time has passed.

Exactly!!!! And I don't see how hosting simchas and mixing with people outside your immediate family or pod, in the middle of a covid surge, could possibly be seen as taking covid seriously.

Taupe - if you have it outdoors with social distancing and masks why can't it be fine?

The rate is Israel though is no where near the U.S.

Israel is under lockdown so the experts obviously don't feel that an outdoor, socially distant shalom zachor is acceptable. Many of the states in the US do not allow outdoor gatherings of 10 or more people. Again, this is a MINIMUM standard of hishtadlus.
