What does your table look like? What foods do you serve?

Depends on the week. I'm pretty basic with food because we enjoy eating the same shabbos foods every week. Same dips, rotate a few different salads, chicken soup, and a main chicken or meat dish with a veggie side dish.

We also don't eat much so we don't make all too much.

We have chicken soup and kneidlach every week. Even in hot Israeli summers. It's not shabbos without chicken soup.

We always use China and silver so the table always looks nice but the menu is not fancy

My Shabbos table is set. A big pet peeve of mine is making sure there are place settings (flatware and glasses) for every person at the meal. I've eaten meals at homes where there's a more laissez-faire attitude towards seating, and always felt awkward - is that my fork? Do you have fork? Are there enough forks?

I serve traditional Shabbos fare. We're not big eaters, so if we aren't hosting then the food is really basic.

I enjoy being a guest at very elegant meals, but could not be bothered to go all out on a regular (or even semi-regular) basis.

I go more all out on special occasions or when we have guests. I enjoy making a fancier meal.

Always use china. If we are alone its a much more basic shabbos.
Alone:
Table set with real silverware and china and glasses
Basic menu
Challah (always white and ww)
4-5 dips. Usually homeade sometimes bought
Salmon
Sprouts salad (sliced salad with sprouts as base)
Soup with veggies, noodles usually, and different types of croutons
Main is usually chicken or meat a veggie and a starch
Dessert depends on week. Sometimes ice cream in cone with sprinkles, sometimes a cake wtvr I have

During day:
Challah
dips
Cholent
Eggs from cholent
Kugel usually overnighted or in cholent
Either shnitzel or leftovers from friday night
Salad
Usually veggy
Dessert

If guests:
Set table with china and silverware and glasses but put out chargers, napkin rings, fancier napkins
Basic meal I change it up.
Challah (white and ww)
Dips- however many I have usually anywhere from 4 to 9 homeade
Fish. Two kinds of salmon
Sprouts salad
Soup. Croutons noodles matza balls veggies
Main
Chicken, meat, roasted potatoes/sweet potatoes, rice, veggies
Dessert

Day meal basic menu I change it up
Challah
Dips
Pulled brisket in wrap bowl
Liver (chopped and not but homeade) and eggs (from cholent)
Cholent
Overnight kugel
Grilled veggies
Shnitzel
Grilled chicken
Hot Pastrami
Deli meat
A few salads
Dessert

For everyone fancy means something else.

Personally, my meal is very basic (perhaps for others it's more than basic) and traditional but delicious Smile and that is
Night
Challa
Gefilta and salmon
Bought dips
Soup with luckshon
Chicken plate: chicken (from soup), ferfel, pc of luckshon Kugel and potato Kugel
No dessert

By day
Challa
Fish and salmon
Bought dips
Eggs and liver
Chulent-meat, Kugel, kishka and chicken gizzards inside with Turkey roll.
No dessert

Table is set with place settings, glass cups for adults, and I serve in China.

I sometimes make, once in a few weeks, matzo balls and freeze em. Carrot muffins I'll make for special occasions. Drinks, other than water and seltzer is from time to time and when I have guest.

We are pretty picky eaters so these work great for us. My guests know I won't make myself crazy with going out of my way and make more fancy food and still invite themselves Smile

I use china. Nothing fancy. White tablecloth.

Night
Challah
Gefilta and salmon or white fish.
Chicken soup with sliced raddishes
Ferfel, potato kugel, carrots and chicken
Garlic on the challah
Apple compote

Day
Lokshen kugel for mezonos
Salmon for shehakol with gefilte
we then wash
Eggs and liver with raddishes
Cholent (we put in eggs, chicken, meat and chicken feet) with three kugels potato (regular and from the cholent), lokshen and cholent kugel (or four if rosh chodesh), gala
Apple compote

We don't eat dips because no mesora. If guests bring some kind of food we'll serve it. Only drink grapejuice until after the fish, then seltzer and and grapejuice.

Sh"Sh
Wash and eat anything, including dips, tuna, avacado, veggies, peanut butter, whatever

I set my table with beautiful basics but no cutlery or plates since my toddler loves to climb on the table and touch/lick everything. I bring out as needed.
my food is traditional and delicious but not overdone.

when I have guest I do things differently. more and fancier food, full table setting....

I'm sure as my kids grow older my regular Shabbos table will improve but for now I need to be realistic and do what keeps me calm.

No.
Our usual is like this.

Ivory tablecloth with plastic on top.
Faux flowers.
Set places, meaning china for older ppl, not matching corelle for younger. Big and small plates. Stainless steel big forks, small forks on folded white napkins, knife and spoon for soup.
Cups are glasses, not crystal, adults get with stems, big kids plain glasses, corelle kids get matching teacups/mugs from that set.

Food is basically brought out in pan it was cooked in, pyrex bowl, etc

Food is usually:
Challah, a dip or 2
Gefilte fish (occasionally salmon)
Soup with either kneidlach or lokshen
Chicken of some sort (bone in)
A kugel and some other starch like rice or diced potatoes or couscous
Roasted or steamed veggies
Sometimes salad
One dessert, usually baked something or other

Lunch is mostly the same but no soup or chicken and add cholent and one other fleishig thing (e.g. sausages or deli or some other non healthy thing)

Totally not fancy but miles above our weekday meals

I like setting a fancy table. I give the little ones china too. it's amazing how they're careful with it. they feel "big". I give them glasses too. usually it's just us for Shabbos.

My table is set with
crushed grey velvet tablecloth
Mirror charger
white china
gold napkin ring
stemware

my meal is usually the same every week:
hot Challah from the oven
store bought dips
olives/pickles
hot pasta under grilled salmon
egg salad with nish nosh crackers (for my DS who doesn't eat fish)
guacamole
chicken soup (knaidlach sometimes/lukshen sometimes)
meat
chicken with potatoes
potato kugel
store bought icecream
baked goods (usually homemade)

Shabbos day for the main is cholent, potato kugel (that was in the cholent) and that's it. I find that everyone just eats the cholent. if I have guests, I will feel like I need to put out more (so I prefer guests Friday night! but can't always choose)

Can someone explain the dips?
People over 50, did they exist when you were a child?
They didn’t exist in my house or any of my friends. (Or DH’s)

But now, apparently, if you don’t have dips you are not really frum.

It's a new added course. I'm in my 30's and they didn't exist in our house growing up. Now is a different story.... my mom gets upset when everyone fills up on dips and doesn't eat the rest of the meal.

Genuinely curious. Never heard of eating a mezonos and shehakol before hamotzi. Why?
It send like you are very into mesorah. Are carrots a mesorah food? Radishes with soup and radishes with liver?
No soda because of health? Why only grape juice until after fish?
I've never heard of these.

Ha I’m with you! I’m 43 but (thankfully) for me my husband and I don’t believe In dips. Ugh why fill yourself up with challah and (in most case ah mayo? I first saw it like 12 years ago at a friends house where they shopped at pomegranate and dips are like $5 for 1/4 of flavored mayo. And you have to have 4 dips at the meal. Nope, it’s not for me.

Wondering this too. And does mesorah in this case just mean ‘what my mother and grandmother did’? Also curios about the radishes.

Right now it’s DH and I and two little ones.
Set table with china, glasses, silverware etc.
Kids are still in high chairs.
Always:
Challah
Fish (either plain gefilte fish or Moroccan gefilte fish. Sometimes salmon instead or in addition if we have a bunch of guests).
Dips only if we have guests bc DH doesn’t want to end up eating too much challah.
Soup
Chicken
Veg (roasted or kugel)
If we have guests, we have in addition: a carb, salad, and maybe extra main like salami w potatoes)
Homemade desert (if we have guests I like to have two options, like cookies plus cake/pie etc)

Lunch:
Challah
Fish
Sometimes liver
(If we have guests than dips and salad)
Chulent
Leftover kugel/veg
Sometimes deli
Desert

I wish we were fancier but I just do not have the energy and honestly my husband is so picky it would feel like a waste considering he probably wouldn't like it anyway.

We do not use china. I probably should start using my fancier set of dishes. I used to at least buy fancy paper plates but the cost was adding up.

Friday night:
challah
2 soups to choose from: chicken and vegetable
gefilta fish
shnitzel and one or two sides (kugel, quiche, rice et)
dessert

shabbat lunch:
challah
gefilta fish and salad
shnitzel and the same sides.
dessert

about once a month I'll make meat instead of shnitzel.

I should really look at what others posted for suggestions. Looking at our menu I see how lame it is.

White or gold tablecloth, covered in plastic. Every place setting gets charger, China, glass with napkin in it, stainless steel cutlery. (Kids that I know will not eat fish won't get fish fork, etc.)

We've upgraded our seudah recently, adding dip/salad. Current standard menu

Friday night:
Kiddush
Challah
Garlic with olive oil
Olive dip
Soda (caffeine free for the kids!) Or Snapple
Gefilte fish
Nish nosh salad and/or Israeli salad
Sometimes canned veggies in small bowls, like baby corn, olives ...
Chicken soup with kneidlach and store bought soup nuts (mandelin)
Chicken or meat
Apple pie (dh calls it kugel, so it's served main dose LOL )
Baked vegetable- mini peppers, and/or broccoli, and/or string beans
No dessert

Day:
Kiddish
Challah
Garlic with olive oil
Olive dip
Soda
(Gefilte fish if leftover and someone wants)
Nish nosh salad and/or Israeli salad
Cholent with meat and (store bought) kishke
No dessert

Dessert is shabbos party, or we skip shabbos party and eat it at shalosh seudos
(Anything from cake to ice cream to marshmallows and fruit roll, to fancy chips, to whatever treats I have in the house)

Shalosh seudos
Challah, same dip and salad
Nice juices or drinks, like lemonade
Sometimes tuna...

If I had guests, Friday night I'd add another side dish like potato kugel or franks in blanks, and serve something like brownies and ice cream for dessert
Day mask I'd probably buy liver, make an extra salad, maybe figure it done other side dish, and serve dessert
And also, I'd I had guests, I'd put everything out on table in serving bowls ore on platters

When just family, I serve first two courses properly, but then,
Friday night main course is in pans on stove, and everyone serves seeks, buffet style, in kitchen

The dips are in plastic containers in the fancy silver plastic holders Smile

28 years ago my brother-in-law introduced us to salads and dips during the fish course (we used to serve salad during the main course and still do). Been doing that ever since.
