You need what’s called a convertible carsest. Some also convert to boosters, some intend you’ll buy a separate booster when they outgrow the front facing harness around 5 or so.

We have the graco slim fit, some people prefer the extend to fit. There’s more expensive and cheaper brands like anything else.
Car seat lady has more info on the choices.

I'm very happy with the evenflo convertible car seat. Maxi cosi is also a good brand.

My toddler is in the Graco convertible that goes up to 65 pounds. He is very comfortable in it and its not a wide klutz

My favorite is the Diono because it’s super narrow but comfortable. It is not cheap at all though.
Britax and graco are also good.
Check out thecarseatlady she has loads of recommendations.

If you travel often and your kid sleeps in the car, you might want to get a car seat that has a head cushion, it's more comfortable.

We love the diono because it’s very narrow, comfortable and has very high safety ratings. It’s not cheap.
