Where do you live? in brooklyn many of the furniture stores sell them, but they can be quite costly. I did not want to spend so much so I bought an ikea headboard that was long enough to span two 48 beds and attached it to the wall (so the beds still separate)

You could have an upholstery shop do a custom headboard for you.

I had my bed done by a custom shop and picked out the exact size, style and fabric I wanted. I love my bed :-).

Not necessarily. A simple design is essentially just a sheet of plywood that is padded and covered. If you are at all handy, you could make it yourself.

My husband just made us headboards for our 48 in beds. If you look online there are some cool diy ones.

48" is a "jewish size". Unless you order something custom you're not going to find that size.
My original master beds were 39" (we upgraded since) and I ordered a beautiful cheap headboard on Amazon for $40.
My friend wanted something cheap too and asked me if I can find something for her 48" master beds. I wasn't able to find any stock items in that size.

All the Jewish furniture stores sell them. Just google furniture stores in monsey, Williamsburg, boro park, Monroe etc and have them ship it to you. The chasuna malls will have as well.

In Brooklyn Living Quarters, Elegant Linen and Taubus all sell upholstered headboards. I inquired and I believe they were all in the $400-$500 range. You can call and ask. I'm looking for one myself and didn't want to spend that much. Wayfair online sells them much cheaper - but nothing for 48" - either Queen or other standard sizes.

It’s a custom size, I don’t believe available anywhere online. Where did you buy your beds?

If you don't mind 3 inches extra on each side of each bed, buy wall mounted headboards in full size (54").
Can look grand.
Won't work with headboards that need to be mounted to the bed frame itself (since the holes won't align).

This is an interesting idea. I have never heard of wall mounted headboards. Can you link an example?

48" is a jewish size, made to fit two beds into a room (although I find our 54" beds small, and im a tiny person, not sure how people use the 48" ones!)
Most furniture stores custom make them. Many stores actually use the frame of the mirror for the dresser set and put custom upholstery in there instead
however, the current style is more of a wall mounted headboard. Try Vant panels from the Vant website

I recently changed mattresses from 44" to 48". Until I get new beds, I padded the backs the old headboard with felt strips and lean it against the wall. Doesn't look too bad.

Check this out: https://vantpanels.com/?gclid=.....D_BwE
I saw their ad many times on instagram. Seems interesting. Not sure though how affordable they are.
