Are you sure you need an apostille and not a notary? An apostille is for when you are signing documents in a different country. it has specific wording in English and the language of the country you’re in.
If you do need one, you’d get it at the consulate, I believe. It must have a raised seal and the ribbon attached.

Apostille.net Luis is very helpful. It will cost more money than doing it yourself, but it is probably worth it.

It is what you need if you're going to make aliyah.

OP, my FIL is going through the process now in NJ. I'll ask him how it works now

The most reasonable way to get documents apostilled is to do it yourself. Depending where you were born/married/went to school there are slightly different rules so in order to get accurate info we would need to know that information. For example, I have some family members born in NYC and some in NYS and for NYC you need an extra document.

Anyway, sending away for your own documents is much cheaper then hiring someone. The government offices charge very little money. I've encountered a range between $15-35. The apostille companies charge hundreds of dollars for the same thing. It's just more time consuming.

I agree. Why feed the sharks?

Google apostille for your state. Things may be different because of Covid, but most state offices are now open (unlike last spring).

An apostille is a government document, used for international purposes, that states and stands behind the validity of another document.

It's another layer of proof, backed by a citizen's country, that someone is who they say they are.

A common one is birth certificate. You take it to a notary, who certified that it's valid, then take the original documents plus the notary letter and seal to the state department. Once you get it all back, you send it to the country needing the apostille.

It can all be done by mail too. The notary needs to be done in person, but you can mail the documents in to the state department. You don't have to go down yourself.

**Disclaimer: I am not an expert, but these were the steps I followed and successfully got apostilles on NYC and NYS birth certificates entirely by mail. Please do your own research. I do not take any responsibility for these instructions, follow them at your own risk.**

Feel free to message me with any questions.

I recommend ordering priority mail envelopes online (free) so you can mail with tracking. You can put these in the mailbox to mail if you print labels online.

Step 1: Order documents

Order birth certificates online
NYC: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/......page
NYS: https://www.health.ny.gov/vita.....h.htm
Be sure to select "Apostille" as the reason you need the birth certificate so that the NYC certificate will be sent with a "Letter of Exemplification"

Order Marriage Certificate in NYC by mail: (pay by certified check $35). Mail with tracking.
https://www.cityclerk.nyc.gov/.....l.pdf
Check "Extended Form" on top left write in "Reason" box "signed in ink for Apostille"

Step 2: County Clerk Certification (only for NYC documents)

Full instructions: http://ww2.nycourts.gov/courts.....Cv41k
(Can also be done in person - depending on Covid - see above link)
Send all NYC documents to: County Clerk of New York County, New York County Courthouse, 60 Centre Street, Room 161, New York, NY 10007.
$3 per document, if mailing, needs to be paid by certified check or US postal order. Mail with tracking.
Include a letter requesting authentication by NY county clerk.
Include a stamped envelope or (ideally) USPS priority envelope inside so that you can track the order on the way back.

Step 3: Apostille https://www.dos.ny.gov/licensi......html

$10 per document, can use a credit card
Form: https://www.dos.ny.gov/licensi.....7.pdf
Mail with tracking. Include return mail label as per instructions.
