I woke up this morning to find that a large amount of money had appeared in my account from the NYS department of labor. I've never lived in New York and have never worked for the state, so it's probably a mistake.
What should I do? This is the weirdest situation.

Yikes. Let the bank know. I once had it the other way around, that my employer deposited a paycheck into a random account.

Go to the NY department of labor website and report a fraud. Looks like somebody applied for unemployment using your social security number.

I reported fraud to the department of labor since somebody applied to unemployment with my name and social security number. they said that they would look into it and there was nothing further for me to do. However I never received a deposit into my bank account. Just report it and ask what your next step should be.

I'd report it to my bank and the NYSDOL asap.
Getting tangled with government errors, especially money, would be very scary for me. I have no idea if their error could be counted as a fraud on my part, but I wouldn't take the risk of not reporting it. It could mean 'hot water'.

Call your bank. Could also be a scam.

Thanks for the tips. I contacted my bank but they said to talk to the NYS DOL, so I've filled out a form. Hoping this isn't identity theft or anything like that.

Your security has probably been breached in some way. File an identity theft report immediately, freeze your credit, and put a fraud alert on your credit reports with the three credit reporting bureaus, Experian, Transunion and Equifax.

Call the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at 1-877-438-4338 or TDD at 1-866-653-4261, or online at http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/fe.....theft to report identity theft.
