Ok. Great. Then you don't want "the great authors". Lol. They are great but you need head space to read The Scarlet Letter or the Age of Innocence.
Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton is a great easy read and a classic. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is similar.
Some of the best books are young adult! Calico Captive and The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth Speare are fabulous. And I second Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes.

The War That Saved My Life
Novel by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
This is a children's/ young adult book, but I really enjoyed it. There is a sequel also that is good.

The orphan train series is young adult and wonderful. And I really loved the witch of blackbird pond that someone else mentioned
