People BUY these things? My dh's are all from fancy simchas. And they're real suede.

That's how we do it.
The answer to the OP's question - when I go to plant a kiss on their head and the kippa smells.

When they fall into the laundry pile and I don't notice them in time to remove them from the pile. After that, they get thrown out because they usually shrink or get misshapen. Otherwise they get worn till they get tossed.

Soft velvet ones are ok to wash, the hard velvet ones get misshapen & unwearable after running thru a cycle. Shrinks & doesn't fit anymore
