Any suggestions of Jewish music that "lives up" to secular music in terms of quality? I AM NOT looking to debate Jewish vs. secular, or get into hashkafic issues etc. Just looking for good quality Jewish music that is real, complex, arranged well, makes you feel, etc. Please don't respond if you've never listened to secular music because you won't get what I'm talking about Smile

TIA!

Brooklyn Jazz Warriors (my husband’s band 🤘🏽🙅🏻‍♀️) jazz / funk music composed and performed by husband who’s a rabbi and a teacher! People often questioned his music as Jewish because it doesn’t sound like the typical Jewish band. The love he talks about is towards Gd. He composes about personal struggles and using Chabad chassidus to overcome challenges.

Aaron Razel is great

Soulfarm is wonderful too

Rocky and the Goldsteins - a band that didn’t last long but was amazing. My husband’s friend.

Perl Wolfe - she is not religious anymore but grew up religious and her latest album is amazing and very kosher lyrics (funk Nola style)

Hasidx - great dance techno nigun music

Alex Clare - love the songs up all night and like a hummingbird! ❤️

Some Zusha stuff I like

Gad Elbaz? - I’m a colombian Jew (Jewish Latina) and he sometimes sounds like Ricky Martin 🙃

Rogers Park

I personally looooove 8th Day’s first albums - very Rocky. They now make like pop rock but back in the days they played classic rock style. ❤️ 🎸

Nissim Black - AMAZING rapper

Omer Adam has a reggaeton song: טמפרטורה! 🐩 🥵

Kabbalah Dream Orchestra. - nostalgia

Early Matisyahu stuff- “shake off the dust”: Great reggae album

For now I'd prefer to stick with songs that were created by and for frum people. I honestly find inspiration in tons of music completely non-Jewish (see above about Christian music haha) but right now I'd like to stay closer to home.

Please post your list!! I'd love to see (and hear) it.

Sorry I never responded I've just been really been busy and had a few crazy months. Didn't have headspace to write.

I hated Joey Newcomb first CD. Too weird. His new CD I really got into and I listen to it all the time. It's not as weird and strange.

We love Ishai Ribo. I find lots of frum music is lofty and sometimes the melodies don’t match the words AT ALL (think Y’hei Y’hei from the Chevra- a pop song with the words of kaddish). If you don’t understand modern Hebrew music, look up the words for him. The lyrics are about yearning for closeness to Hashem, falling and rising, longing for eretz Yisrael. Try Achat u’Tamid. Nathan Goshen also is good.
