I have storage cubes a couple feet from the wall, facing the wall, so you cant see what’s in them unless you go back there. It creates a little designated kid/toy nook.

It depends how many toys you have and whether you want the kids to be able to access them. I used to have open shelving, like the kallax cube storage and I went mad as firstly there wasn't enough space for all the toys, and also my kids would just tip out all of the toys.
I went to Ikea and bought a pax wardrobe with shelves and I can now lock away the other toys. I bought it in a nice light wood color which fits in with the rest of my decor.
