Are you actually tuned in for each and every word?
My understanding is that you have to actually be paying attention to each word, it's not enough to just hear. If this is true I've probably never been yotzeh megillah in my life. It goes for like 40 minutes it's impossible for my mind not go wander!

I hope that's not the case.
Because my understanding is limited. I do not understand every word being said.
Speculating.....I was taught that vidu must be UNDERSTOOD to be kosher, so our teachers made sure to make us memorize-memorize-memorize the translation. Not so for megillah.

People who don't understand a word of Hebrew fulfill the mitzvah just by hearing it.

I find it easier to pay attention to each word when I'm paying attention to what the words are saying. I do understand most of it, so that helps. I haven't been able to in years, though, due to having young children and being busy with them. I listen but often without the concentration I wish I could give it.
