I am considering purchasing a steam mop. I noticed they require the usage of distilled water. I live in an area where the water is very hard. Am I able to soften the water at home, and how, or I must buy distilled water? Do you have an issue with the mop pad shifting, falling off or the elastic getting stretched out? How many times of being used till they wear out?

I have the Shark steam mop and I don’t know if it requires distilled water, I never did that. I love it! I’ve had it for 2.5 years and have replaced the mop pads twice (20$ for 2 at BB&B).
