I’m trying to make a number cake for my little daughters birthday. Just need to figure out a simple recipe for the cream. Anyone know a basic recipe... with simple ingredients. I thank you in advance!

Just whip a carton or two (depending on the size of your cake) of whipped topping and mix it with a ready made run of custard. Baker’s choice makes it.

Would like to try this. Do u need to beat the whip in mixer or do you do this by hand?

Beat it well with a mixer till stiff.
I beat a whip & add an instant vanilla pudding, beat till stiff & add a bakers choice custard. Mix well. It's the best cream I've tried.

Does this work well if done in advance?or does it lose its volume?

I think it would work. Mine got eaten within hours of making so I wouldn’t know. But starch in custard (or instant pudding) should stabilise it.
