Still how does it add up to 2k?? Unless you shop only in Jewish fancy stores Smile

I'm not sure it precisely adds up to 2k. I don't buy robes for example every single year. But I do start off in Jewish stores, and then supplement when I can from other places. It works better in the winter because in the summer everything is extremely trashy.
2 or 3 Shabbos outfits at approx 150 each... 6-7 weekday outfits (I do laundry once a week)... Shoes at approx 100 a pair...It adds up! Not to mention replacing nude tights in the summer since they're one time use.

I spend on things that we need and want - like most everyone I know.

This is really interesting. My husband and I both have access to our joint checking and savings accounts. I also have a personal account where I transfer $100 a month for personal things. That could include coffee, lunch, sushi, manicures, accessories I don't really need, gifts for other people, etc. I use our money for everything else-my wardrobe in the beginning of each season, the first few pairs of shoes I buy per season, food shopping, Target, Walmart, etc. For example, when I buy some new spring makeup before Pesach, that's regular money. Same with my Pesach wardrobe (generally about 2k per season).

You buy yourself a whole new wardrobe every season including several pairs of shoes?

You just don’t know lol. I’m 35 in Lakewood. I do Botox. Probably spend $2000 a season on clothing for myself, couple of hundred dollars on makeup, I eat out 2-3 times per week...
Can’t think of what else but I’m sure there’s more

I’m really surprised that women feel pressured to do Botox in really frum towns. Why do you feel the need to look younger?

Not everyone is rolling in dough. I make $50,000 a year. My husband doesn't make anything. If I need something, I buy it. My budget doesn't let me make impulse buys or waste money on unnecessary extras. Everything is calculated carefully.

I don’t feel pressure. I want it for myself. My husband tried to convince me not to

Yup! I did just get married, this might change in the future. I'll probably just turn into my mother, who never buys anything for herself and only shops second hand. Laugh

No system here. I use my credit card maybe once every 2 months. Dh would love for me to but what I want but maybe he has the luxury of feeling that way because I don’t spend money. Sometimes he will decide I need something and get it for me.

Trust me. I read these threads on here and I honestly don’t believe real people live like that. Just like they are shocked some people spend $2k a season on clothing....

Maybe it’s only Lakewood people?

Edited to add- the last line was said in jest.

Oh, I am definitely having a hard time fathoming spending $2,000 on 1 seasons clothing on myself!!! Sounds crazy to me.

But you said it’s a widespread practice in Lakewood.

Lol my mind is still blown too!
Bh I make a good salary and if I wanted to I could spend that kind of money, but I don't think I could even figure out what to spend it on!
1-2 good skirts- $150 at the most
Tops from Zara/H +M etc - maaaybe $250 but probably not even that
A couple of dresses- ok I'll overestimate at $600 but probably not even that
Maybe like 2 pairs of shoes (from online like Century21, not Jewish stores) $150-200
That's really it...
Also- probably almost all this stuff would survive until the next year, so I wouldn't spend nearly as much that year. (maybe not some of the tops, but some definitely would)

Ok, I forgot. I also bought 3 new shells in lakewood, as two at serendipity that I cropped.

Sorry, I seriously doubt understand spending $2000 a year on clothes.
I'm not an old lady! I'm 32.
I'm admittedly not stylish.

I have 2-4 shabbos outfits, didn't buy new ones every year.
I'm a teacher and I have a rotation of about 8 tops and three black skirts that I wear. (Several from other years)
I have 2 pairs of black weekday shoes, one of which I wear in wear on shabbos if I go out as it isn't too snowy and frozen, otherwise if I were popping in to wish a mazel tov on a snowy day I'd wear my boots. Nude pair for shabbos.

I wear my 12 year old sheitel that I have dyed a few times... But I got a new one about two years ago and I wear it for shabbos.
Each my own old sheitels, but had new one set professionally twice.

My coat I've had for 14 years. It is regular landsend. Never in style never out of style.

I tweeze my eyebrows and had them waxed once in the past twelve years. The waxing lady said they were fine. I tweeze and bleach upper lip.
No manicures or pedicures. Not my type.

Yeah, I'm a neb Laugh

Seriously though, Lakewood ladies who spend so much on clothes and beauty, what is your income like?

Our combined income is less than 30k.

Don't call yourself a neb! Just because you don't spend tons of money on material things doesn't make you a neb.

Call yourself thrifty, money-conscious, responsible with the money you do have, financially creative 😂

I am also curious about income- if you are spending thousands on each season's clothing (just for yourself.... can't even imagine how much it costs to clothe your whole family?!), what is your yearly income???

Can we just get one thing straight, underwear/bras/tights do not count as "spending on yourself". Those are basic functional requirements. Bras and tights also need to be replaced fairly frequently, they don't last forever. And a decent bra, especially for the well endowed, costs a lot, and no, it is not a luxury. So I don't count that as spending on myself. But yes, I can go years between buying the clothes that the world actually sees.
