I work in a seminary for teens at risk and wrote this after my class last week...
When I walk inside the classroom
On your desk, I spy your heart
For I know that you are vulnerable
And I see that from the start
The things that life has dealt you
The choices you have made
The shame you hold on tight to
Your eyes they are afraid
You try to hide your weakness
Behind your dress and swagger
But I know how words affect you
And each comment is a dagger
You claim that you don't need me
But you won't let go of my hugs
You say you want a better life
Of phones and fun and drugs
I see beneath your facade
I feel the depth of your pain
And I know that no matter what
At your side I will remain
There are times you pull away
You feel that you've shared too much
Allowed someone to love you
And now scared of their touch
I may decide to give you space
To leave you with your pride
But just know that I am thinking of you
Though my hands right now tied
I try to impart the beauty
Of the world that we are in
But sometimes you only see darkness
And then your mind does spin
You ask me questions I don't know
The answer you don't always need
Sometimes I understand that
It's just an attention plead
I tell you that I love you
Despite all that you've done
And please believe me, student dear
For in my eyes you have won
You battle every morning
You wage war in the night
And just to see you sitting there
I know you'll be all right
For if you can join my class
And even hear the words I say
You're not too far to come back home
Though you may have gone astray
I pray for your safety all the time
And hope that you will grow
And one day you'll remember that I cared
And that's what I want you to know

Beautifully written! If this is something you can write for yourself, I'm sure your students can feel that you genuinely care for them! כמים הפנים לפנים. Your caring must come through in real life. I don't know if most of them can even realize how lucky they are!
