Im worried. My child started stuttering. It got to point where child rubs mouth when it happens, attempting to stop it. If your child had this issue and it resolved, any leads in brooklyn.

Yes, check for strep and PANDAS.

But if that doesn't yield any results, then it's good to know that many children go through a stage where they stutter for a bit. It happens when their speech develops a lot in a short time and they need more time to practice using using it. A few of my kids went through a stage where they stuttered for a few weeks and then stopped on their own. Their speech therapist was adamant that we ignore it completely. Pointing it out to the kid can make him more self conscious.

It's very frustrating for a child to stutter. It's also frustrating to listen to it. Keep in mind that the child is suffering and you should never rush him or make him feel badly about the stutter.

It is a good idea to consult with a speech therapist. They may be able to tell if it's something to worry about or not. Certainly if it doesn't go away in a few weeks, you want to get speech therapy.

Most children who develop a stutter will have it disappear on its own and less than 1% will stutter forever. For those, it's neurological and often genetic. Does anyone in the extended family have it? If not, your child's will probably go away soon.

The first step is to provide him a safe environment where he can stutter away and not feel anxious about it. Tell him openly that you know how he gets frustrated sometimes, but it’s totally ok. It happens sometimes, and he can take his time talking because you are listening to everything he wants to tell you.

See how he does with singing and automatic sentence completion tasks.

Stuttering is neurological, so speech therapy may not be able to change it, but you should still definitely get him speech.

You can also check for pandas, as mentioned, but way after he is comfortable at home with his stutter.

Sorry, don't know any therapists in that area, but if the stutter does persist, look into the lidcombe program. Very successful for little kids, but younger the better so don't push off for too long.
