Be careful not to flush down more than the crumbs. If there are big pieces of bread left keep them out of your toilet because you don’t want to back up your sewer system.

Re the garbage cans:
It depends on the city or town rules.
In Lakewood, each garbage can says in big letters "Property of Lakewood Township".
So therefore, many Rabbanim hold that you can put chametz in the garbage cans because they clearly belong to the township not individuals.
But different Rabbanim and different communities hold differently.
