Or perhaps this should be in controversial topics?
Someone wrote “the Ukraine” today
And turned off commenting for non-friends
I wanted to jump right in the fray
Defend her to the bitter end
But oh, what use, when I turn around
And see anti-semitism abound
When a woman who just wants a voice
Is bullied for her language choice
I know we’re in the midst of a war
But what are we fighting *for*?
We are different — in soul and heart
It is our values that set us apart
The Knesset has parties that unabashedly call
For the death of Israel. Strange? Not at all!
There’s no such thing as too much dissent
In a healthy society that’s not hell-bent
On uniformity of speech and thought
Where no one fears that they’ll be “caught”
More examples? Not really. America’s worse.
Is Plato right? Is democracy a curse?
People that I used to respect, good lord,
Now treat “free speech” as a swear word
Free societies stubbornly self-impose
What dictatorships mete out in a bigger dose
I’m hardly a libertarian, nor a debater
But can we limit censorship to “fire!” in a crowded theater?

Do your read Alexander McCall Smith's Scotland Yard books? If it was set in the Ukraine, I feel like could be an ending to a book, a la the requisite Angus poem.

PF... you’re doing it
It’s Ukraine, not the Ukraine.
I like Alexander McCall Smith but haven’t read that particular series.

Great writing
Great expression of angst on this topic!
Thank you
As a side.
I grew up saying Ukraine.
Never heard of the Ukraine.
Not American born.
But I also don't know the details of what that faux pas implies. If you want to share. ..
And please keep sharing your writing.
Its fantastic.
Hope you are well!

Our computer crashed recently so I didn't want it to crash again, certainly before checking to see if this was taken in the spirit in which it was intended.
Your poem is real life, serious, not the light soap opera of McCall Smith's Scotland. But elegant, thoughtful reading,, and I like your hashkafos a whole lot more.
I just heard Natan Sharansky speak last week on a Zoom program. Don't ask me what he said as I was partially distracted. But I can't help but think about what he has to say about healthy societies, that you said so well. We're living in imperfect times and places and to be able to function as a society, we need transparency and to be able to question.
May this month herald the ultimate geulah, and a healed world.
