My son will be getting engaged y"h soon. The day of the vort will be her birthday.
I would like to get her something small and personal but I am so bad at this I need some suggestions.
She is the type who will go around without makeup and a slinky skirt with sneakers if that gives you an idea of the type of girl she is.
Any suggestions are welcomed.

That's so nice of you!

New sneakers? (With receipt, so she can adjust for size if necessary)

Books or a magazine subscription, if you or DS know what she reads?

Mazel tov!

I'm all for Amazon GC when I don't know a person well.

DS should also get her something extra for her birthday.

MIL bought me simple but pretty gold hoop earrings for my birthday when I was engaged. (Okay, she actually asked her daughter to get them for me.) I was really touched. And I'm the type to go around with no makeup and a slinky skirt to this day!

Bag or wallet (my dh bought me one when we were engaged and I’m still using it 15 years later). Album for pics.

I got engaged about a week an a half before my birthday. My in-laws got me a small, everyday gold bracelet. This was 25 years ago. It is not the worlds more interesting or glamorous bracelet and I wear it with my watch-it is not a show-stopper, but it made such a wonderful impression.

I would appreciate an actual item. I feel very not cared for when getting a GC. Like it was a must to get a gift, but she couldn't be bothered to put in thought.
Simple hoops, rings, bags, uggs slippers, invite to night out at restaurant etc.

I got a beautiful jewelry box. Was a nice idea.
I think a handbag/clutch is also nice.

I don't know why, but I think that any simple jewelry might be -- confusing -- on the same day as the vort, especially if there's a minhag to gift certain jewelry during the engagement.

That's why I like the idea of a nice toiletry bag (NOT cosmetics, which could be seen as criticism) or a wallet with a shoulder strap.

I agree it should be a thing not a gift card, but not something that she’ll feel pressured to wear or use around you. She’ll be happy to receive something from you even if she doesn’t end up using it. Maybe a book? New earphones?

This is just one of those times you can't win... I feel uncared for when I get a gift that I would have preferred to chose on my own and I think a gift certificate is the best way to show you care. My mother in law, even after 15 years, has no idea what my taste is and so every gift she buys me is either her taste or a household item (literally tupperware). She also feels a gc is inappropriate so she will never even ask me what I would like. She used to ask my kids what they would like and gets offended when they say a gc. My own family always sends them and we really appreciate it.
