I don't know what the yeshiva serves, but ds keeps a box of cereal in school since he doesn't always like the yeshiva breakfast and often brings a cream cheese sandwich and/or yogurt for lunch since he doesn't usually like the lunches. Once in a while, he goes out for pizza instead of eating in the school lunchroom. Once a kid is high school age, if he doesn't like the school lunch, he could prepare his own food at home. It's not that hard to make a sandwich.

I don't have boys that age. But school lunches are not known to be the best, but often are ok. If he's a picky eater, it could be a problem. I don't make lunches for my kids who don't like. They are welcome to prepare their own. This is a good incentive for them to go with the school lunches as they don't want to bother making lunches. (But not sure if it makes sense to ask a boy to prepare his lunch given his very long days at yeshiva.

Ds has no problem preparing his lunch. He has to be at shachris at 7:40 every day. Twice a week he finishes at 8:15; the other 2 days he finishes at 6:30. If he has time for roblox, he has time to make a sandwich or grab some yogurts.

When my son was in a yeshiva, not dorming, they had chulent almost everyday for lunch. I ended up making him food. My dorm boys had better food. When I was in school, we weren’t given any lunch, so it didn’t even occur to me that he would get.
