What should our reaction be?

He was a rasha and be happy? Say yemach shemo?
Be sad as the death of any Yid?
Something else?

I'm looking for opinions but also what sources/knowledge you may be aware of on the proper reaction to someone who made an international chillul Hashem and was unrepentant.

I'm sorry, we're not allowed to post about dead people on the day they die, no matter how horrible they are. Yael's rules.

My apologies. I was not aware. Hopefully a mod will delete soon.

[Unlocked by mod the following day. Please keep the conversation respectful, general and on the op's topic: Appropriate reactions to the death of a Jew who caused a chillul Hashem. Thanks!]

I'm not sure what the official halacha is.

My uninformed opinion is that the correct response may depend on if he did tshuva.

What were they?

It's very hard because he was supposedly a Jew. But from his life story and the incredible tzaar he caused so many people. From the stories told of him he seemed to lack all 3 of the middot.

I spent all week grappling with this.
People like to throw around the "he did teshuva on his deathbed" line.
Maybe Madoff did. Maybe he didn't. Hopefully he had sincere regrets.
But teshuva means apologizing to those one hurts and spending a lifetime trying to fix and make it up.
And that's what I just don't see.
So I get left confused about how to think.
Except jail time is not a replacement for returning what you stole.

The man is dead, let him rest in peace. Don't you have more important things to discuss? Nothing to see here folks, move on.

Our family's response was that he was a tortured soul. He suffered the deaths of his sons after he went to jail and he went from the heights of luxury to the depths of deprivation when he went to jail. While jail is a terrible place in general, to a homeless person it's 3 free hot meals per day, a bed, a bathroom, and medical care but for a pampered person, it's unfathomable. I think that he tried to get out of jail based on his medical problems that required better care but this was denied.
We don't know what happens in the next world and possibly he did something beneficial to someone that was weighed against the greed and evil. More than likely, no future descendants will be named for him, nor will they want people to connect them to him. There won't be anything dedicated to his memory or people coming to his grave in reverence.

When I heard the news I felt for all the people he swindled who must have been triggered all over again. But beyond that, I didn't give it any thought.
No, actually, I felt sad for the tragedy that was the Madoff family. While he was in jail one son committed suicide, another died of cancer. So those tragedies along with terrible decisions made.
And then I didn't give it any more thought.

The good news is Hashem will know what his true punishment should be now. If he suffered enough on earth, if he did teshuva, etc. BDE.
