My 12 year old DD would like to lose 10-15 lbs though her own choice. She mentioned she would like to go to a nutritionist-any recommendations?
Thanks in advance

I really hope the person you recommended is experienced with adolescent girls. And will not encourage a 12 to to lose weight- 10-15 pounds over some number someone read somewhere is NOT overweight. Going on a weight loss diet at age 12 of pretty much a guarantee to have massive weight problem in the future. Bw careful!!!!

Yes this does worry me. She is “chubby” . We always tell her she looks beautiful and is perfect , but I think she’s gotten comments in school. She didn’t have her Favorite snacks this week so I’m thinking she may be motivated enough to lose those 10-15 lbs that bother her.
I’m thinking that following a nutritionist plan will allow her to eat more then if she watches herself.
I probably need someone that specialises with teens.
Thanks

I dont have a specific recommendation but in case you would like opinions, at 12, skipping snacking should be enough to lose weight. 6 months of no 'snack' snack, regular meals and it should fall off by itself. If she replaces her snack with an apple or nuts/raisins or such the weight should come off. If she wants more do the fill your dinner plate once generously but don't go back for seconds.
If it were me, I would tell her I noticed she is doing it on her own. And I think she will be successful just by skipping the usual snacking and replacing with nutrient dense healthy ones since she is still at an age where you grow.
Instead to go to a nutritionist and if you would rather put that money for clothing she will need because you are pretty confident based on how serious she is that it will happen. Let her put that money aside each week that she feels she is doing it on her own. Like this she will know you believe in her and are hearing her unhappiness with having excess weight.
I am wary of sending tweens to nutritionists. I think mommy is best at this age. If anything you go yourself for one session to get the advice that you can use to help her.

She really needs a good nutritional diet at that age. Someone to explain what is considered balanced healthy meals and snacks so she can make healthy choices in her diet. I'm not familiar enough with nutritionists but maybe someone gere can make a recommendation of a nutritionist who can give her a basic information lesson.
Also, at that age it would be helpful for her to do some exercise. Find what interests her and have her enrolled in some type of dancing class for instance

I have opinions of Nutrition by Tanya that can’t be discussed on this site as per Tanya threatening to sue Yael if anyone gives negative reviews and Yale countered by not allowing any review at all, even positive.
I will say that these places can be focused on getting the teen to “lose weight” because that would spell “success” for the business. Anyone can call themselves a “nutritionist” or “nutritional counselor” ant I don’t think anyone who isn’t a RD who specializes in working with teens is worth your daughter seeing.

Raizy Weinreb is a Registered Dietitian. She teaches nutrition at Brooklyn College with is how I know of her. She has a very wholesome view of the field, she taught me about kids and Division of Responsibility years ago, really good food foundations.
The number I have is (732) 803-5310

Do not go to anyone who is not a Registered Dietitian with a focus on pediatrics. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. Make sure that you speak to the person prior to find out their philosophy and that you are on the same page. I would be weary of anyone who wants the job but doesn’t have significant experience in the specific area and want to to talk to you first.
I am a Registered Dietitian with 20 years experience but my area is Diabetes and Renal Failure. I am very competent but would NOT take the case as I know enough to know that it is not my area of expertise and how sensitive the situation may be would not want to have a negative impact on your DD.
Choose wisely.

Be very careful. This is a very crucial age and a regular diet at this age can lead to eating disorders!!!

Tread very very carefully.
Under no circumstances should losing weight at this age be encouraged. Do not take her to someone who will weigh her. At all.
She can go to a registered pediatric dietician to learn healthy habits (if she has what to learn). AND send her to therapy to work through her self image stuff now.
Unfortunately mommy saying she's beautiful isn't gonna cut it but a professional telling her that this is an age of her growing and tweens and puberty is the reason for chubbiness but all normal and ok. The combination of taking her seriously enough to go to a professional as well as some therapy for what's driving this at her age is a good idea.
Better to do nothing though.
You can sign her up for dance classes or whatever movement stuff she likes and ask her if she wants the family to focus on more healthy suppers but do not make this an issue.

I have a 12 year old who also started begging to go to a nutritionist after seeing successful results on a neighbor.
I just took her to Rochelle, I think her last name is Elbogen. She spent 1.5 hours explaining to my daughter how her body digests stuff, and whatever she eats affects her differently.
Very patient etc.
She also gave her a food suggestion plan....next week she’s planning to talk to her about exercise etc....

Do not!
They can be extremely damaging.
She should exercise over eating diet foods
Nutrition by Tanya isn’t healthy and is all calorie based. That will mess with her mind
There are 10000s of workouts on YouTube. There’s teen hour at the gyms.
Better to move!! Especially for 10-15 lbs.

I don’t know what the OP decided. I’m looking for Rochelle Elbogen’s phone number for a 16 year old.

Another vote to stay far away from Tanya, especially for kids. That's all I'll say so the great she monster doesn't get angered.
