I think you're supposed to light a candle once a day after sunset or before you light shabbos candles on Friday and say that you're lighting a candle liluy nishmat Rav Menachem Mendel Ben Rav Yosef Miriminov and then daven in his zechus that Hashem should answer your prayer. And that if he does (specify the time frame and how you know that you were answered), you'll publicize that you lit a candle for 40 days liluy nishmat Rav Menachem Mendel ben Rav Yosef Miriminov and that you were answered.
