Considered in married to a BT...

I live in a modern Orthodox community. There are many, many BTs and some geirim.

No one is embarrassed about their journey. I guess if there was stigma people wouldn't talk about it and then you wouldn't know.

I checked off that I know geirim and bts because I met many of them when I lived oot.

But now that I live in Lakewood I really don’t know whether someone is or isn’t. It’s not something that’s discussed.

For the person who voted that they dont know any bts or gerim personally, most of the time you wouldnt even know it. Its not something thst one walks around with a sign about this part of their life.

Two of my classmates (out of 10 total) growing up had mothers who had converted. That's probably a bigger deal then than it is now. And I know countless BT or children of BT. Not sure what the big deal is. They integrate into the community just fine.

I'm confused how someone wouldn't know a single BT or ger!

Almost all my friends from after high school are BT. I only know this because they told me and as far as geirim go or other BT go, no idea because it’s not discussed and who cares?!

For some reason, my brain read the word "single" as single vs. married, the first time around.

Then I did a double take and was like, oh!

An FFB accompanied a recent BT to a previous Gerrer Rebbe (don't remember which one, heard this story in a Rabbi Reisman shiur ~20 years ago) and introduced the fellow, saying this man is a ba'al teshuva, not me.

The Rebbe sharply responded "and why not you as well?"

Well if you do know a BT or ger of single marital status, here's a plug to have them in mind re a shidduch!

Imamothers never cease to amaze me with their insularity, and lack of embarrassment at this insularity. And by the insensitivity. How would a giyoret or BT feel when she reads such a poll? Probably not too great.

I am so happy that I know many gerim and many BTs. They have added so much to my life. I hate to think of any of them feeling bad after reading this poll.

Also, the poll's choices are not the best. What if you know 1 BT and a few geirim? 1 ger and a few BTs? Your choices don't cover those situations, so poll takers would need to choose that murky choice "Other."
