A man in Estonia who had been in prison since 1983 for theft, rape, and two murders, among other crimes, has been freed. His life sentence was commuted for good behavior. He participated in vocational training, took language courses, and expressed remorse for his crimes.

Imagine how surprised he’ll be at how much the world has changed!

Wow.
With all the courses he took before release, I hope he gets ongoing counseling and support while he acclimates.

Can you imagine, though?

He may want to go back to jail.

Kidding, of course.

Did you ever see the film Goodbye, Lenin! about a ardent communist woman in East Germany who wakes up from a coma after Reunification and her family jumps through hoops trying to conceal from her the fact that the communist leadership has fallen?

(Obviously, this guy wasn't in that situation, but it made me think of the film.)

Right, but in America, which is much more stable.

I was going to say this reminds me of The Shawshank Redemption. An old guy who was in jail for many years is released and he had never seen moving cars before. He ends up committing suicide because he can't adjust to being an ex-con whereas in jail, he had been very well respected.
