Dc hates the feeling of a runny nose but I can’t seem to teach them to blow. And they won’t let me clean it out myself. Are there any tips or tricks that I don’t know of?

When I taught swim I would tell the kids to hum in order to blow bubbles from their nose. I taught 3 ye olds.

I don't know why I never tried that with my owns kids lol.

Teach them to hum! Maybe even little hard/forcefully. Eventually they'll get the sensation and won't hum everytime they need to clean their nose out lol.

Have the child blow bubbles.
Then have the child blow bubbles with a closed mouth.
The air will come out through the nose.

I learned using the word down instead of out (blow down) helped immensely.

3 is the right age to start teaching this. He may need your help at first, but he'll get it.

I really like the bubble blowing idea!

Yes please tell us!! I tried everything! They blow out of their mouth bubbles, but how do you explain to a baby that to get buggers out you need to blow out of your NOSE!

Meanwhile, you can use that freeda pump, you know.

No great tips. I just repeatedly demonstrated to her what I was doing, in a dramatic way as I said blow

Oh gosh, I would need to hit the gym 6 times a week to be able to hold him down while I attempt it!

It really depends. Any kid with asd or asd like traits, or general klutziness and focusing issues, motor planning issues, depth perception issues, executive function issues, ADD or anything in any of these categories will struggle.
You can try a few sessions of OT but it’s very likely the OT will find more issues and it won’t be just a few sessions.
You can try telling the kid to blow on a candle but with mouth closed.

He actually gets OT now. Didn’t know this falls under that but will speak to the therapist.

Have him breath forcefully in and out through their nose a couple of times with you doing the same.
Then have them do just the out part.

My son learned (at age 7!) by first practicing using his nose to blow pom poms on a table. Nothing else we tried prior worked for him.

I never realized that this is something that needs to be taught until now with DC 6. He's over 3 and can't master blowing his nose.

My pediatrician also recommended blowing out candles with his nose - I haven't tried it yet.
