If it's covid he would likely have a fever over 101.

When I had covid my fever never got higher than 101
Not saying this is covid tho. Just saying you can have covid without fever

Most people get a fever though. That’s why they take your temp everywhere. And I think I misspoke. I think the temp is 100.4 not 101.

My 4 kids and I all had COVID. Only my one year old had fever. None of us even had 99.
Two of us had a runny nose, one had a slight cough, two had stomachaches, I had a headache, and one no symptoms.
I'd definitely get him tested

As others have said, it could be anything, but it never hurts to get the test just in case.
Some people can be asymptomatic, or have a very light case. That doesn't mean that they're not contagious as all heck. That's the problem, people only feel a little bit off, so they go about their daily routines, or don't rest up fully.
There's a big difference between being in quarantine for 2 weeks, and getting over a short bout of the stomach flu or food poisoning. If he gets the test, you'll have the comfort of knowing for sure one way or the other, and can plan accordingly.

This is how it started for a coworker of mine. At that point, he immediately left and got tested. He was positive. So was his wife.
BH Our employer is really strict about COVID protocols so no one else (at least here) caught it from him.
His wife who is a hospital nurse lagged him by hours in getting sick too.

It is true that you don't need a fever to have covid (I never had a fever, and neither did my husband), but I think when there are severe symptoms like throwing up, some fever would be expected.
I would probably test in his case though.
