I never really had one of those little bassinets. First baby slept in a crib in my room until I moved the crib out when she was about four or five months old. Now she's still in that crib and my younger one is in a Pack n Play in my room.
If you like the bassinet, no need to switch out until baby is too big based on the manufacturer's instructions.

From a bassinet in my room to a crib in a separate room at between three and six months depending how soon they slept for 4-5 hours in a row.

I use the carriage bassinet till up to 3 months and then switch to a porta crib.
Baby sleeps in my room up to 4 weeks and then is moved to the bedroom right near mine.
I wake up throughout the night to nurse. I found they slept better in a different room. Otherwise they "snacked" all night and I wouldn't sleep.
