The FDA has cleared the Pfizer vaccine for adolescents ages 12-15. The CDC committee will meet soon. If they also approve it, kids in that age bracket could start getting vaccinated immediately afterwards.

Again, approved for EMERGENCY/ EXPERIMENTAL use. Not regular FDA approval. Just to be clear.

Where did I say approval? I said authorized. They received Emergency Use Authorization. Where are you getting experimental? That’s not what the E stands for in EAU.

Pfizer has submitted an application for full approval for use in adults, though it has not yet received it. It’s likely to come through in the next couple of months.

Why are you amother and why are you using all caps?

So scary. I don't know why anyone would want to give a child an experimental vaccine. Yes, it was tested...but not tested for long term effects. Covid barely effects children, why do we need to sulubject them to this?

Well, it's still in testing even as it's being taken by a huge portion of the population (who has volunteered to be the guinea pigs). That makes it experimental.

How many kids died from covid alone?

And why do I want to play the odds with my kid getting side effects from an experimental vaccine?

Some public school teachers don't want to be in the classroom with unvaccinated kids but I don't see that happening in the frum schools in Monsey. Some kids are also cared for or raised by vulnerable grandparents or other older relatives.

That's not a reason to make kids take the vaccine. Especially since CDC now says kids are not superspreaders. If a teacher doesn't like it she can find another job. And if children are being raised by vulnerable grandparents they can choose to give them vaccine. It makes no sense to force children to take an experimental vaccine for a disease that doesn't greatly affect them.

A 15 year old is a biological adult.

Yes and no.
They might be subject to pediatric ranges and treatments in different areas. It also depends on the physical maturity of the 15 year old.

My 12 year old is pre-asthmatic and at higher risk for covid. I don't want him having complications of long covid either. I will be discussing the vaccine at his upcoming well visit with his pediatrician and also with his specialist doctors so we can decide if he's better off vaccinated or not.

We've been very careful until now, but so many places are now going mask optional now that a majority of adults are vaccinated that it's harder to protect the children and it's not fair to keep them home anymore.

A 12 year old girl can carry a pregnancy. Children can transmit the virus from the age of 10. Most kids that age weigh 100 lbs so why would they be less likely to transmit the virus than a small adult?

Eta: I recall the information exactly as I wrote it with b"h a very good memory for accuracy, especially since I found it insanely shocking HOWEVER I cannot recall the source, because I read so much, therefore do not be concerned unless you find a way to verify this data is in fact Pfizers trial data in the SUBSET of trials in children.

Legitamitely there are risks both ways.

In Pfizers papers on the trials in children, this or the one under this age group they had 9/200 death rate from the vaccine. Thats around 4.5%. Consider that risk against the risks we have seen from the virus in that age group.

I am not saying what is right or wrong, just bringing the literature to your attention.

"Kids are not superspreaders" is a statement badly in need of clarification.

Do you know anyone who's been near a high school this year? Let me tell you, teens are super good at spreading Coronavirus. There's no difference in the transmissibility between the Freshmen and the Seniors.

The vaccines are safe, as far as we know from giving them to literally hundreds of millions of people.

The value of giving a teen the vaccine is to prevent them from being the shaliach that gets someone else terribly sick, or dead. Or, more practically, to prevent putting other people in annoying quarantines. Getting vaxed is a very altruistic thing for a teen to do.

This is misstated. Cite your sources.
