Im not in Lkwd but I'm a speech therapist with some experience in voice

There are definitely children who need voice therapy. However the first step is to go to an ENT to see if there is any vocal pathology/lesion as that will inform the treatment plan and methods used. A speech therapist really should not initiate voice therapy unless there is clearance for an ENT

For example acid reflux can cause hoarseness. If a child has that then the reflux needs to be treated and voice therapy alone won't be helpful

I can speak as an adult who gets voice therapy:

Insurance-covered voice therapy? good luck with that. For me it was a waste of time, and made things worse.

What's most helpful is voice therapy that includes hands on. It's about using the hands to allow the client to sense where and how he/she is tensing/straining. Most insurance based voice therapists do not have this ''manual therapy'' training, and if they do, they only have minimal of it. Ask a Feldenkrais practitioner to refer you to one who specializes in voice. Feldenkrais isn't the only modality, it's only one. There are others, for instance, the ''Stough Method''. That one is awesome! See if you can find a practitioner trained in the Stough method.

Agree that its hard to find a good voice therapist who takes insurance. I mentioned that I'm a speech therapist, but I also suffered from a rare voice disorder at one point in my life. I shelled out a ton of $$$ for a top therapist but BH it was successful at restoring my vocal function

Technically all speech therapists are licensed to do voice therapy, but you want to find one who has extra training in voice and knows a variety of techniques like the manual method mentioned above (which is just one of many effective proven modalities, such as vocal function exercises and resonant voice therapy)

Would you mind providing more information? I'm very interested to check out these other proven effective modalities. I'm going to need voice therapy for life, so would like to try different ones.

I have a structural problem, if I don't fix it with surgery I'l be going for voice therapy throughout my life, for as long as I want to have a functional voice.
