I think also if you send to us we can give better advice on how to proceed- if it is really more generic etc

As I said, I have already written it and planned to submit it. I'm just nervous about hurting this person were she to recognize herself.

Thank you. I think you are right. I am too biased and need an objective opinion. (I pmed you)

This thread has been niggling at me, and now I realized why.
There's a slight but not so remote chance your woman might be me!
Can you tell us what kind of writing she usually does? Not too specific.

She writes personal stories about her life and her family. She is an older woman.

I sent it to you.

At this point, I won't be sending it to anyone else, since I already got sufficient feedback. Thanks to all the Imas who read my story and gave me their perspective. Much appreciated!

B'hatzlacha whatever you choose to do.

Do you mind returning to the thread with an update when you make the decision whether to submit or not?

I once had an author call to "confirm some details" about a true anecdote I had published and that she was rewriting for her own book, which was going to print that week - without asking permission whatsoever. I was gobsmacked but too embarrassed to point out how rude she was being, especially since in the past I'd enjoyed her work. Never mind me, she should have asked the source of the original anecdote for permission (or at the very least given her work to them to approve first)! Every time I read her work now I get a bad feeling in my stomach. I'm still not sure how to feel, but try to remind myself that certainly she did not mean to be malicious, and she probably meant it as a compliment.

If it didn't happen to you, might I respectfully suggest you get ironclad permission from the subject in question?

(Edited to remove pertinent details so THIS anecdote doesn’t infringe on anyone’s privacy.)

This is a very sensitive topic to me as I have a close relative who writes for Yated,Circle, Hamodia, etc and has many a time hurt feelings or caused disputes by using things told to her in confidence and writing them as a story in a way that we were easily identified. I can’t stress enough that not worth it! If it’s not your story and your story alone please don’t write about others without their permission
