We need to move but I can't figure out what is the right approach- do we choose a place where the schools seem to be a good fit, or do we move to the area that meets our (other) needs, and then go with the school options in that area?

Honestly schools are important. You want to be in a place where the schools are equipped to meet your childs needs. I would strongly factor that in.

For me it would be schools first. I won’t be happy if my kids (and I) aren’t happy with their schools.

Schools first. For us, the main reason we live where we do is because we really really like our kids schools. If it wasnt for that I would have moved ages ago.

Schools, especially if you think any of your kids might need extra help/attention. Remember, school is for most of the day for years in end. You want to get it right.

we moved because of school and then switched schools and then switched back... we weren't the only ones... things change but that's true for the community as a whole as well. I still say schools but just something to keep in mind.
