Somebody asks you a seemingly benign question which you cannot answer without speaking LH.
Is it okay to say, "I can't answer that without getting into LH."
Or have you already spoken LH simply by saying that, as it clearly suggests there is something negative surrounding the person/people connected with the question.
Hope the question is clear.
And if it's not okay to respond this way - well, what then is one to do/say?

From what I understand, it's LH to say that. You're essentially telling them that there is bad information. I'm impressed that you're asking btw..
Can you say you're not sure or something vague like that?

IIRC, you cannot say "I can't answer without this turning into LH"
I think you're supposed to say "I prefer not to answer" or "I don't know"

Yeah saying it’s lh is already lh about the person. Can you try to focus the conversation on a different direction? Like if it’s a shidduch question start speaking about the positives instead. Or say you don’t know the person well enough to answer those details.

When it's a shidduch question, the truth has to be told. Nobody should be mislead.
