Review basic safety information. I just sent my DD to camp for the first time, and before going I told her we are just gonna review - no one is allowed to touch you, anything that makes you uncomfortable you tell a trusted adult, no going off on your own to any secluded space, not by yourself and not with another girl either....If it feels uncomfortable, don't do it!

On a less cynical note, here are some practical tips for first time campers:
1. Put socks in a mesh bag or have him clip each pair together with a safety pin before putting in the laundry bag.
2. If your son is not prone to showering without being told (and don't expect male counselors to tell him until he REALLY smells), ask him to do his bunkmates a favor and try to shower every night.
3. He should drink a lot of water, especially when playing sports.
4. It's okay and normal to be homesick the first few days. Best way to deal with it is to distract himself with all the fun camp activities.
Tip for you as a mother - don't be surprised if his toothbrush comes back perfectly new.
