I think it’s funny when they are named after an actor or celeb. My nieces dog is cara. She gets compliments wherever she goes

Dog's names should be no longer than 2 syllables. It's easier to get their attention that way.

But since you mentioned Atticus, our beagle is named Scout--after the character in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.
Scout works for both males and females.

(My husband wanted to name her Gizmo. My kids did not support that, thank goodness.)

Place names are good, like Paris, or London. Food is a good one, too. I've also known dogs named Farfel, Noodle, and even Waffle! Dogs generally respond best to short names that end in an vowel, like Fido, Coco, Hero, or Loco. One friend of mine just named her dog Kelev.

I was taught that you should never give an animal a human name (Unless you want to name your dog after a rasha, I guess.) Lehavdil, it's supposed to be an insult to a human who might have that name.

I found this out after I had named one of my dogs Bernie, because he looked like a smallish Bernese Mountain Dog. It's like naming a pot bellied mini pig Shmueli. When you put it that way, it makes sense. No one frum wants a non kosher animal named after them, or any animal, period.

I named my current dog Nessiyah, because she came to me just before Chanukah, and I really needed a miracle. Then I found out that although it was rare, it was still sometimes used as a girl's name among Israelis! Banging head Now when I call her, I say "Nesyah" really fast, so it won't sound like I'm calling her a human name like Rochel or Leah.

Once I had a puppy that was really crazy, and an occasional escape artist. I named him "Wingnut" (a piece of hardware that goes on a bolt. It also means "silly.")

Whatever you name your dog, make sure that it is something that you don't mind yelling out loud as you run down the street, or across a busy dog park! embarrassed

If you named him Achashverosh, you could call him "Roshi" for short. (Not Rasha, that's not nice.)

I heard of a dog named Peeve. The owner introduced it as “my pet peeve”.

If I ever get a hamster, this is what I am going to name him. Professor Peeves.

This!
As someone who is fostering a dog with a 3-syllable name, I find myself shortening it to get her immediate attention. I never realized what a difference this makes, especially if you need them to listen NOW.
(Previous foster dog had one syllable, much more practical)
