Thanks for the Lakewood people for chiming in. Lakewood is like it's own little country.

Israeli and Lakewood circles can be very different as to what is accepted and what is not. Israel seems pretty accepting of all variations of Jewish/Hebrew names, varying by circle, or course. For example you're not going to find a lot of Alons or Ben-Zions hanging out in Bnei Brak.

You're giving him the name Yaakov. If he doesn't like the nickname you suggest he'll just change it.

IyH due to give birth to a boy very soon. We would like to name the baby Yaakov. I was just reading a book and there was a character by the name of Koby - Hebrew name was Yaakov. We both really like both names and we’re thinking to call the baby Koby as a nickname. The only Kobys I’ve ever heard of are secular Israelis though...we live in Lakewood. I know it’s not a typical Lakewood name but that doesn’t bother me. Anyone know any frum Koby’s?

I’m in Lakewood and don’t know any kobys. I don’t think it’s too popular. His rebbi will call him Yaakov. It’s could be cute nickname till he’s 5-6 then I would just do yaakov
