my 3 year old loves magnectix. He also really enjoys hama beads. And lego is always popular. (we only have small lego not duplo)
http://www.megabloks.com/en/ki.....I.php
be warned though - the metal balls roll away and disappear very quickly. Also could be dangerous for younger kids.

Legos. We have duplos. She plays with them every day (she just turned 4), and we have a lego-compatible Dora set too...

I suggest a good set of nice wooden blocks. I always loved those! they're versatile, you can use any character playset with them. and they survive all kinds of mistreatment.

Duplos or Megablocks are great. I would stay away from magnetix with a younger child unless he will be very closely supervised as they are super dangerous if swallowed and they are small enough to swallow.

foam blocks from sesame street. ds loves to build with them and they don't wind up hurting anyone if they get thrown,

another vote for duplo. ALL my kids (ages 1.5 - 7) can play with them for hours.

my kids all loved the large cardboard 'bricks' when they were younger.
we also have a large set of blocks that get used every single day.
and I love kapla. not so much for the under 4 set, but for the older ones, its pretty cool

ds loves puzzles - he's 3.5. We started small (10-12 pc), he's now up to 50 pc puzzels!
And another vote for lego/duplo and cars!
