Oil that area (canola/olive...) and comb it out.

It's gross but works. Take a bowl of creamy peanut butter into the bathroom. Sit and massage it into the affected hair until the gum loosens and you can remove it. It takes time and patience.
You'll need to wash her hair like 3 times to get the scent out. But worthwhile not to have to cut off the lock of hair.
Good luck!

I second the peanut butter. It kind of makes the gum break apart into small pieces and releases it from the hair. Yes, gross, but it works.

I had it this summer. An entire was of him smushed into hair.
Peanut butter came up online too,but I tried the oil first and it worked. Need LOTS of patience.

Heat up vinegar in the microwave and use a tooth brush to brush it off. The hot vinegar dissolves the gum

I had really good luck with the oil that comes in a spray can.

Then very gently start untangling from the bottom of the hair up. Knitting needles can help pick out especially difficult knots. Make sure that there is plenty of slack between the gum and the scalp, and your child doesn't get their hair pulled.

If there's a lot of gum, and it's in a really bad, obvious place, and you just can't deal, please get DC to a hair dresser right away! They see this aaaaall the time. When school starts, I'd say it's probably half of their parnossa!

Anything greasy will dissolve gum. Peanut butter is handy but a little expensive. Salad oil or baby oil will do just as well for a fraction of the price.
