This only started recently, DD is 18 months old.
She latches properly, and seems to be sucking and swallowing, it's just annoying. I wonder if there's anything to do about it.

The clicking sound is the sound of ‘losing the latch.’ What’s weird is that I just noticed my 13 month old making this sound while nursing too. She’s always been a great nurser....

Clicking sound means air is getting in while sucking.

Is she teething? Sick? Thrush? Sounds like she changed the way she latches, for some reason.

I only get it with newborns when I'm engorged and letdown is too fast.

Not trying to scare AT ALL. Telling mom these things so she can help her child. Most oral dysfunction is undiagnosed or missed and then the kid is in speech therapy, OT, PT with providers that don’t believe in tongue/lip ties because they don’t teach it in college or masters programs. Sleep disordered breathing then leads to sleep apnea cpap machines and more. Theres also unnecessary dental work, even scoliosis- the list goes on of all connected issues to ties. Many many children have it and goes undiagnosed and if you’re trying to get to the root of the problem- information like this can help tremendously. I highly recommend reading Tongue Tied by Dr. Richard Baxter. I have a ton of experience in this area and can help guide you OP if you’re interested in finding help (that most pediatricians are clueless about). Common does NOT mean normal

My child had that and at 18 months when the ent was scheduling surgery for tubes he did a full exam. He found the tongue tie. The pediatrician missed it all that time! There is more than one type of tongue tie and not all Drs can detect it.
There can be other reasons as well like low/weak muscles (2 different things) and other reasons like too much milk coming in.
Please get this checked out by an ENT to make sure all is ok.
