We always just built it directly on the grass, with no other flooring. Wobbly table and chairs were part of the fun. Sometimes the grass was damp. I don't remember anyone minding. We might have worn boots on occasion, but not as a regular thing. My father claimed it was all part of the authentic sukkah experience.

I’m having a lot of company and would prefer not to have the authentic outdoor experience

You brought back memories from my childhood! Before my parents got a patio, they used a "floor" for the succah on the grass. It was made of 3 very thin, lightweight wood boards. Two were side by side and the other covered the rest of the rectangular shaped floor. Is this making sense?
They would have to be left out to dry in sunny weather for at least 24 hours after YT.
I don't know if this would work for you, because it sounds like your grass is not even.
I have also seen carpet. If you know someone who is redoing their carpets, maybe you can get a huge piece of the old one

What about a tarp? It will kill the grass but then so will anything else that is laid directly on the ground.

Buy or rent a dance floor. Google "dance floor rentals."

Maybe buy a large outdoor rug? They can be between $60-120.

I use an outdoor carpet. I bought a cheap one from Lowe’s and it’s lasted 3 years so far!

We layed out afew pallet's, the size of our sukkah and screwed wooden boards on it to create a floor. We then leveled it with some 2x4's so it was straight.
