DD is 4 1/2 and she's always been very active and sensory seeking. What I want to hear from people is whether it all sounds like something or just within normal. I am waiting for an assessment, but until then I've been googling and I don't know what fits. And I'd love it if anyone can weigh in and say they've got a child with similar behaviors and what it might be.
I always potentially thought she might have slight ADHD (it does run in the family). She's always been very active, always been the one who has to touch everything as she walks past. If I'm doing baking, she has to put her fingers in the mixture and play with the flour and spill my sugar. There's totally lack of impulse control. She's also often been clumsy and falls (her eyesight is apparently fine) but hurting herself doesn't seem to bother her. She's injured herself badly enough to require trips to the emergency room more than once but hasn't cried much with the injury. She loves baths but screams with the shower and hates having her hair washed. She also hates having her teeth brushed. She likes playing with her siblings. Goes to the toilet fine but won't call me to help her and will just stay in the bathroom until I realize she needs help. Is my best eater and isn't fussy at all with what she eats.
I considered ASD but don't feel that fits as socially she's good. And now from googling ADHD, not sure it really fits her complete picture.
So if anyone has any suggestions, whether potential avenues to go down or whatever, I'd love to hear them.

My guess, based on a kid who shares a lot of the same tendencies, is ADHD with borderline ASD.

But I don't think the label is very useful for this. I'd focus more on strategies to help her succeed. You can probably get any diagnosis you want if you need it to get certain therapies.

There is such a thing as SPD (sensory processing disorder) that fits your description.

But honestly, evaluation is going to give you more and better information. Can you schedule something thorough, like a neuropsych eval?

A lot of what you describe is sensory-related, which often comes along with other diagnoses such as adhd.

Thanks.
Imasinger, quick google sounds like SPD might match up quite well with her.
I am going to have her assessed, but I know I will need to push for what she needs and if I have a focus of which direction I might need to look at, it will help me get her referred to the right services. I need to go through my doctor for a referral and it's a long process, and they're more old school anyway which might make it harder.
I'm not big on labels either, which is why I've not done anything until now, but I know if she's going to need more support in school, then I need to define her needs more than she likes/wants/dislikes etc. I am trying to put in strategies to help her already, but I can see I need a more tailored approach than what I've been doing and some real professionals to help with it.
Are OTs qualified to assess her? I think I would be able to get a private OT assessment already now but I would need to wait for the referral for a full evaluation.

Ask your potential OT (yes, they can do a SP assessment) about their experience with diagnosis and insurance coverage. That may be a factor in your decision process about timing.

I think OT can help with many of the issues you described. And after that she may not need a diagnosis, she may be fine. Or she might have a diagnosis, and your OT will help point you in the right direction.

Op I’ve been through the collection of specialists with my daughter until I finally went for a comprehensive private evaluation. Paid through the nose but at least I got clarity of a diagnoses and how to treat it. Dd has adhd, we put her on Ritalin, she’s a different child,
We are also taking her to a proper dr who handles her symptoms at the core.

The comprehensive private evaluation was worth every penny. The free assessments for the local boe didn’t do much..didn’t diagnose her with adhd or recommend further testing…

shes 4! dont jump to adhd/add until shes at least 8 and even then you want to be carfull I was misdaignosed as a child and till today I have problems because of the drugs. I know its a shtick todays to say your child has issues but what know one realizes is that the child will grow up and if you drugged them as a child they will be forever scarred! trust me I know from personal experience.
