I think it's a cost saving thing.

And maybe it's easier in some places to buy cottage cheese than ricotta.

Not unique to the frum community.

I don’t know but I had never heard of it before this site.

I don't think it's a frum thing per se but with that said, I did start using cottage cheese in place of ricotta when I began keeping cholov yisroel. Cottage cheese was available and ricotta was not.

I actually thought it was a diet thing. I feel like I've seen "light" recipes with it on regular sites.

Yeah, I have always speculated this is why too, especially OOT for those who keep CY. Cottage cheese is usually much easier to find than ricotta or farmers cheese.

I saw the Pioneer Woman use cottage cheese instead of ricotta. She's the antithesis of a frum cook. So it's probably a question of availability.

Cheaper, skinnier and more likely to be in my fridge. Ricotta I’d have to buy special. Cottage is always there. I also use yogurt in lieu of sour cream for the same reasons. I haven’t even tasted sour cream since maybe 1970.

My OOT community doesn't have CY ricotta. Sometimes before shavuos they bring in a bit.

Yeah I wondered about the CY availability thing. My non jewish coworkers were HORRIFIED when I told them I use cottage cheese in lasagna and had never heard of it which is why I thought maybe it was a frum thing.

I’ve used my immersion blender to make the cottage cheese much smoother, so it’s more similar to ricotta.
Also-was it in this site that someone suggested freezing the cottage cheese first? They were saying that somehow, that makes it smooth like ricotta. Haven’t tried it yet.

How about-thats how my kids prefer it-as the reason for nusing cottage cheese over ricotta?
If I use ricotta I get complaints!

Authentic lasagna doesn’t have either. I prefer it with cottage cheese but don’t think I have ever had a lasagna I didn’t like

I do it because of the calories. I use Friendship whipped cottage cheese.

I’ve watched my very petite mom down containers she’s added cling peaches to. The kind with the syrup. She never gains an ounce. Me? Hah. Fat free yogurt. (And fat free sour cream the one time during the year I make my grandmother’s sweet kugel.)
