I'm the ine who mentioned that we had seen Dr. Rubin, than made an appointment with Dr. Alexander.
unfortunately due to covid, our appointment was canceled by them. we booked another appointment for December. Hopefully we won't need to quarantine according to their guidelines.

I used Dr Press. I think he’s very good. But he doesn’t just give prisms because you ask. First he said my son needed one, but at the recheck he decided my son didn’t need it anymore.

I’m an ophthalmologist/cataract and cornea surgeon and would take my own child to a well-respected pediatric ophthalmologist, not optometrist or vision therapy. They can determine definitively if there is a medical eye issue that could impair reading. Would not do prisms or vision therapy without a clear indication and a thorough eye exam by a pediatric ophthalmologist.

I am an SLP that has evaluated over 1000 children - many of them have auditory-processing based dyslexia’s and/or attention deficits, but were misdiagnosed by ‘reading specialists’.
Sometimes the issue is vision-based, but very often (in fact, most often) its not. The fact that he has trouble remembering phone numbers is VERY telling.
Do yourself and your child a favor and get a full neuropsych evaluation.
Dr. Mandelman (Brooklyn, Manhattan) is great, but there are other excellent neuropsychologists as well. |
I’m an SLP working for 25 years in the field. This information about auditory processing based dyslexia etc is complete nonsense. Number memory is unrelated to reading skills. Auditory processing is completely unrelated to reading. Best not to get advice online from a message board. What is correct is that you need experts in the field to advise you. An expert psychological evaluation can help find the area of weakness and determine whether the problem is in visual spatial field or elsewhere. Hatzlacha.
