I wonder about this. Because it's lab grown and stores selling lab grown diamonds are popping up all over, won't the resale value decrease? If I buy a real diamond, then even if it doesn't increase in value the value is there if and when I ever contemplate a resale. But with lab grown becoming more and more popular, chances are that the $3k I pay today will only have a $1,500 resale value in 10 years?

It's very possible. The reason why diamonds have retained their value till now is because the supply was artificially reduced by the dealers. Diamonds aren't rare anymore and they can easily be mined nowadays, so the major players kept a large supply in storage to keep the prices at its inflated value.

With the introduction of lab grown diamonds, these players no longer have the tight control over the market. These lab grown diamonds are considered to be real gems, (as opposed to zirconia) and its becoming increasingly popular. Its pricing point is significantly lower than the natural diamonds, yet not very cheap so they still retain value and significance. If the trend continues, the value of the natural diamonds will be affected.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but lab grown diamonds are not “a fraction of the price”. I looked into it and they’re thousands of dollars.

Agree - they're around 3/4 of the price, and not a small fraction of the price.

They are relatives of mine and I can attest that they have been in diamonds for generations. If you Google them use the name Monderer Perlow and you will get their information.

(No I don't make commission Smile I'm not that closely related! But it's nice to see my family name being recommended!)

Very nice people. I ordered through his daughters in law in Lakewood.

I would say closer to 5/6th of the price. It’s really not a huge difference.

Without any sort of resale value at all, I’d just opt for a good quality cubic zirconia.

That is still a fraction. Though one could argue that it would still be a fraction of the price if it were an improper fraction.

A cubic zirconia doesn't last, even good quality one.

Following this thread. I actually have a lab grown diamond jewelry store, and could answer any questions out there, there are a lot of myths and misconceptions about lab grown diamonds going around.
Some important pointers:
[list]Theyre 100% real, and many certified. Make sure to get a certified diamond, from a reliable lab, so you know what youre getting.
They are 40-60% cheaper. You will probably find some that charge more, but you can find them at this discount. Do your research!
Get educated in diamond quality before purchasing one, as not everyone will tell you some very important factors when buying a diamond.

Can you give some pointers?
Also, if I give you an anonymous email address would you be able to tell me where to do my research on getting it at the 40-60 discount? Thanks

Sure! You can give me an email adress.
Important factors when getting a diamond:
Color: DEF is colorless and nicest. GH nearly colorless, also nice, IJ and on have a tinge and I wouldnt recommend.
Clarity: Any clarity with VS is clear to the naked eye, SI1 has inclusions that are sometimes more noticeable, depending the size/location of inclusion.
Cut: something most jewelers dont tell you about, but is probably one of the most important factors that determine sparkle of the diamond. IDEAL cut is the best out there. Excellent cut is decent. Less than that is not recommended.
Some diamonds have some clouding as well, make sure the diamond youre looking at is clear.
These are the top pointers.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Even if it doesn’t last past , I dunno, five years? You’ve paid far far less for the stone. In any case, the manufactured stone has zero resale. Anything that can be manufactured perfect, in volume, isn’t going to appreciate anyway.
