My son has never been easy. This year he is in a regular school (with a shadow). The shadow is pretty much unnecessary and he is usually good in school. His main problem that is making me pull out my hair: he pretends to not understand and then try's to think of creative ways for example if were sitting in bed and I say lay down hell say : okay and then go off his bed and lay on the floor. Please dont tell me maybe he doesnt understand- he does. This happens with every conversation we have. If words are uttered he'll stop and think how to turn them into something silly. If my husband asks my daughter do you wanna go and then she responds yes I wanna go hell say: ohh you wanna go to gan eden (then she'll scream and scream but side point.) This whole silly situation is pretty newish. It drives me crazy. I feel like I can never talk normal with him. I want to cry. Last year he was in a special ed preschool (hes 6 now) so now I'm thinking maybe he regressed but my husband claims he was always hard and just not in this way and therapy hasn't helped so much. I never wrote so long on imamother I'm just so depressed and he is emotionally draining me. I'm sorry if this ramble is hard to understand . It's been a day.. Crying

Both my pandas kids have this as an ocd. Pretend literal understanding.

Start with your pediatrician. Tell them you suspect pandas. Behavioral regression is also a big red flag. Hopefully they will give you some antibiotics (azithromycin or augmentin preferably) On your own you could also start your kid on motrin, Zyrtec and robitussin. Those 3 over the counter medications always stop flares in their tracks for us. Our pandas specialist recommended them to us.

Sounds like he might benefit from learning about Superflex vs the Unthinkables (social thinking curriculum). I suspect he's gotten into the Unthinkable called Wasfunnyonce, who, upon seeing a certain joke, repeats it ad nauseum.

So interesting imasinger is that something I purchase and learn with him? Or does a therapist do it?

To the another that suggested antibiotics. I hate putting him on antibiotics because he becomes even more deregulated every time.

Is there a behavior dr/neurophycologist or something near lakewood that can help me get to the bottom of this? I would appreciate someone holistic that can look at all areas.

More dysregulated with antibiotics might mean die off, which is a good sign in a way, because it means it’s working. Alternately, it could mean he has a significant amount of gut dysbiosis going on, probably lots of yeast, all of which is common with asd. I haven’t used this practice myself, but it looks great. https://cwdcenter.com/ . Also, you can try the other medications. If they work, that can give you a pretty big clue as to what’s going on.

You can buy the materials yourself, they're expensive. If you have a BCBA, they probably have access to all these materials too.

Here's one good place to learn morehttps://www.socialthinking.com/

And here's another good place to get connection and support:

This really resonates. I'm going to look into it. OP, sounds like my son with HF ASD...drives me crazy too as it can be very socially awkward (in addition to being annoying) no reason to jump to other things unless you have other concerns too.
ETA, thanks imasinger for posting

Hi!

First of all, if we could all stop suggesting magical cures that don't exist for Autism, that would be helpful. No, it's not PANDAS and no, it's not a yeast infection. There is no magic pill to take that makes everything go away.

Second, I think it shows amazing progress that your son is in a regular classroom! You said that "therapy isn't helping", but the fact that he's "good in school" and "doesn't need his aide" and is in a regular classroom after being in special ed is an amazing milestone! That's wonderful!

What therapy in particular are you using, and how is it not helpful?

Regarding your son's silly behavior, you need to address it with common ABA techniques. While the program Imasinger recommended is cute and is definitely something good to have in your toolbox, it also might be that your son might take a long time to understand the underlying premise. It's actually quite complex!

In the meantime, figure out why your son is doing the silly interpretations. Is it to get attention? Then put it on extinction and praise him for other behaviors. Is it because he wants to get out of the instruction? Tie your bedtime routines with a motivational If/Then. Is it because his other friends do it or he honestly doesn't understand why this is a bad thing? Name the behavior ("You're doing 'silly behavior' again, let's try again." and tie it to a negative consequence.).

Do you have a BCBA that you trust to go over problematic behaviors and how to tackle them?
