They claim knife is only used for that, but there's no hashgacha. I think the owner isn't frum.

We checked with the mashgiach in our city and it’s ok, if the knife is only used for fruit or vegetables. You may want to check with your rov though.

There are other concerns like how it’s washed for example.

Is it cut in store or from a mass chain that brings it in prepackaged?

(Some will say to make a new clean cut on each store-cut edge.)

Everyone I know does. But I don’t. I also don’t buy cut fruit from a kosher store so I’m a bad sample

It is my understanding that by law they can only use a knife that's only used for produce. And it's cold and not acidic/sharp (different than buying cut up onions or tomatoes).

I used to buy cut watermelon in the supermarket since they cut the fruit in a separate area in the back. Then one day I came in and only saw whole watermelons. I asked one of the workers if they had any cut ones so he took a whole one to the deli counter and cut it up into peices. That was the end of my buying cut fruit in a nonjewish store.

According to my rav, you can by cut fruit (assuming there's no issue of bugs or anything) from a large store that would be worried about getting sued for an allergic reaction or religious issue. The little grocery on the corner probably does what they want and assumes no one will notice. But let's say Walmart, Costco type would be fine according to him.

How would you know if they’re not washing it together with other knives used in the grocery?

I don't think he sells anything else that's cut and open, but I have to check.

Also how do you know he's not using it to cut his own food at lunchtime or whatever?
Years ago my brother worked at a couple of various kosher restaurants that employed non Jewish workers, and he witnessed the cook cutting his treif (hot) food with utensils or heating it up in the oven. Obviously my brother told the mashgiach but if he hadn't seen it happening nobody would have been the wiser.
