Is it needed- no. But I like when my kids look nicer on Shabbos so my 2.5 yo has one.

Definitely not a nerd!! Saying this as living in Boro Park! My almost 3 year old does not have one.
What I did see is that some ppl buy a shabbos jacket. (think little girls in wool/knit capes) I did not want the extra expense so I shopped for a neutral/classy looking spring jacket vs a fun, sporty look.
