I haven't been to enough chasunas to remember. Do both sides wear the same color gown? Usually? Usually not? They can, but don't necessarily? They shouldn't?

Depends on the crowd.
In more modox type crowds, usually both sides wear the same color, as part of the wedding party.
In yeshivish or chassidish crowds, usually each side wears their own color.
Obviously these rules aren't set in stone and there are plenty of exceptions. But Ive been working in the gown business for 7 years and this is what I've seen in general.
